                                       Facts about DNA Repair

DNA can be defined as the master molecule in every organism. It serves as the blueprint for the formation of all proteins and enzymes. It is the repository of genetic information in each living cell. It acts as a permanent copy of the cell genome. There are times when the DNA molecules get damaged and need repairing. DNA repair can be defined as a collection of the processes to identify and correct the damage. The rate of repair depends on various different factors including the cell type, age of the cell etc.

Quick Facts: –

  • UV light is one of the major sources of damage to DNA.
  • The repair process exists in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms.
  • Human DNA is 95% identical to the DNA of chimpanzees and 50% identical to the DNA of
  • One single gram of DNA is capable of holding approximately 700 terabytes of data.
  • The genetic code is made up of four types of bases which are adenine, guanine, cytosine and thymidine.
  • DNA base damage can occur after direct attack by external sources.
  • If the DNA damage does not get repaired, it can lead to mutation and more possibly some kind of disease.
  • To detect the damage, DNA is extracted from human cells and then analyzed chemically for its components.
  • This damage occurs at a high frequency due to metabolic processes and environmental factors.
  • Just like any other molecule, DNA can also go through a variety of chemical reactions.
  • They are essential for growth, reproduction, maintenance and to sustain normal living.
