Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun. This planet was formed about 4.5 billion years ago and named after the Roman god of war. It is one of the four terrestrial planets of the solar system. It is sometimes referred to as the Red Planet because of the red-brown color of its surface. Mars is the second smallest planet in the entire solar system. The gravity of this planet is only 37% of the earth’s. It has the same landmass as of the planet earth even though it has only 15% of the earth’s volume. Olympus Mons is the tallest mountain in the solar system which is located on this planet.

  • Few astronomers claim that Mars had water in the ancient past.
  • This planet takes 687 earth days to complete an orbit of the Sun.
  • It is tilted on its axis by about 25.19 degrees which is similar to the earth’s axial tilt (22.5 degrees).
  • It has an atmosphere somewhat similar to Venus. The atmosphere of Mars is one of the least hospitable ones in the solar system.
  • This planet is also home to the largest dust storms covering the entire planet. These dust storms can last for months
  • Mars has two moons that are named as Phobos and Deimos.
  • Radar images have shown that the planet is emerging from an ice age that ended 400,000 years ago.
  • In about every two years, Mars and Earth are at their closest point to each other with a distance of approximately 33 million miles between them.
  • The temperature on the planet can be as low as -153°C or as high as 20°C.
