Jim Lovell  

Jim Lovell is a former NASA astronaut. He is also a retired U.S. Naval Captain. He was a test pilot before joining NASA in 1962. He flew into space four times in the Gemini and Apollo Programs and is the first person to do so. Lovell logged in more than 700 hours in space. He is also the first person to fly to the moon twice. He was born on March 25, 1928 in Cleveland, Ohio. He went to Juneau High School and became an Eagle Scout. He attended the University of Wisconsin and then the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis where he earned a Bachelor in Science in 1952.

  • In 1958, Jim Lovell graduated from Naval Test Pilot School and started a career testing fighter aircraft and other jets.
  • From 1958 to 1962, he worked as a test pilot at the Naval Air Test Center in Maryland.
  • He first went into space aboard Gemini 7 in 1965. He also served as the command module pilot on Apollo 8.
  • Apollo 8 was launched on December 21, 1968. It was the first manned flight around the moon.
  • Jim Lovell served as the commander of the Apollo 13 mission.
  • They failed to land on the moon because of loss of electric power and failure of both oxygen tanks due to technical problems.
  • Lovell received the Presidential Medal of Freedom on April 18, 1970.
  • In 1971, he became a deputy director of the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas.
  • He retired from the Navy and NASA on March 1, 1973 and then started working for Bay-Houston Towing Company. He retired from there in 1991.
  • Later he moved to Illinois and opened a successful restaurant there.
