Mark Twain


Mark Twain was one of the greatest American authors and humorists. His original name was Samuel Langhorne Clemens. He picked up the pen name Mark Twain while writing for the Virginia City newspaper in 1863. He was born on November 30th, 1835, two months prematurely in Florida, Missouri.

As a child, he remained sick most of the time and was not expected to live. His father John Marshall Clemens was an attorney and justice of the peace. He was one of seven children of his parent. He lost 3 of his siblings in childhood and only 3 other survived to the adulthood.

  • When he was 11 years old, his father died of pneumonia. He quit school and became a printer’s apprentice.
  • With a limited formal schooling, Mark Twain spent evenings in libraries educating himself where the school had left off.
  • He also worked as a steamboat pilot for two years but his career was cut short by the Civil War.
  • Mark Twain despised the idea of a ‘big’ government.
  • According to Twain himself, he was saved nine times from drowning in Mississippi.
  • His first major literary success was titled “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County”.
  • In 1870, he married Olivia Langdon and they had four children together.
  • He was interested in science and technology as well. He patented three inventions which are an elastic strap for pants, a history trivia game, and a self-pasting scrapbook.
  • He had a lot of money through writing but had to file for bankruptcy due to some bad investments.
  • He died of a heart attack on April 21, 1910, in Redding, Connecticut.
