                                                  Saturn Missions

Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun. It is the second largest planet in our entire solar system. It is not the only planet with rings. These rings are made from billions of rock and ice chunks. This ring system is spread out over a distance of 175,000 miles. This planet is named after the Roman god of farming. Sometimes the planet is also referred as ‘the jewel of the solar system’. The average surface temperature of this planet is -178°C and there is some difference between the temperature of poles and the equator. Saturn has seasons because it has a tilt.

Saturn Missions: –

Till now, total four spacecraft have visited Saturn.

  • Pioneer 11 was launched in May 1973. This spacecraft visited Saturn in September 1979. We lost contact with this probe in November 1995.
  • Voyager 2 was launched before Voyager 1 on September 5, 1977. This spacecraft returned about 900 images of the planet.
  • Voyager 1 was launched in September 1977. It visited the planet in November 1980. This spacecraft also sent back few pictures. It was also able to fly by Saturn’s moon, Titan.
  • The Cassini-Huygens mission was divided into two parts. It consists of the Cassini orbiter and the Huygens probe. This mission was launched on October 13, 1997.

  • The planet has about 150 moons and other smaller moonlets. Titan and Rhea are two largest moons.

  • It has oval-shaped storms that are similar to Jupiter’s.
