Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton was an Irish-born British explorer. He is best known for leading the ‘Endurance’ expedition of 1914-16. His mission left a few days after the outbreak of WWI and he offered his ship, crew and provisions to the British Admiralty to help in the war effort, but they urged him to pursue his quest.
