Material Properties Facts for Kids Video
Material Properties Facts
There are two types of material properties: – physical properties and chemical properties. These properties can affect the job of a material. Physical properties can be observed or measured without changing the composition of the matter. Chemical properties can be observed or measured by changing a substance’s chemical identity.
Physical properties: –
Physical properties describe the state of a particular material. They are generally categorized in two types: – Intensive and Extensive. Intensive properties are those which do not depend on the amount of matter and they include density, colour, luster, malleability and conductivity. Extensive properties depend on the amount of matter and they include mass, volume and length.
Chemical properties: –
They are different from physical properties. They change the chemical nature of a matter. These properties include toxicity, flammability, chemical stability, oxidation state, pH and reactivity with water etc. chemical properties help in a substance’s purification, separation from others.
Quick Facts: –
- Physical properties can be observed by viewing or touching a sample.
- To investigate the chemical properties, the internal structure of a substance must be affected.
- Identifying the properties of a substance helps us to know the nature of substance.
- All material properties are either physical or chemical and either intensive or extensive.
