                                     Simple Science Experiments

Science projects don’t have to be expensive. Here are a few fun and simple science experiments that you can do at home using things that you already have lying around the house.

  • Mentos Geyser: – Make sure you are doing this experiment outside. All you need for this is a 2-liter diet coke and one packet of mentos. Position the bottle on the ground so that it does not tip over. The trick is to get all the mentos in the bottle at once. The best way to do that is to roll a piece of paper, put them in and then drop it in the bottle. Each Mentos candy has thousands of tiny pits all over the surface. As soon as the mentos get into the soda, bubbles form all over the surface of the candy and literally push the liquid out of the bottle.
  • Volcano: – For this experiment, you would require baking soda, dish soap, vinegar and food coloring. Pour baking soda, dish soap and food coloring in a cup and place it on the ground. Now for the eruption, add vinegar and watch a volcano come alive. The cool lava is a result of a chemical reaction between baking soda and vinegar which produces carbon dioxide. The dish soap causes the additional bubbles.
  • Tornado in a bottle: – You need two 2 liter bottles with their label cut off, water and food coloring. Pour water into one of the bottles and add food coloring. Now tape both the bottles together. Give it a twirl and you will see a funnel-like structure as the bottle drains. It is just like a real tornado but much safer even if you are up close.
  • Oobleck: – Oobleck is basically similar to quicksand. For this project, you need water, cornstarch and a large mixing bowl. Quicksand is nothing more than a soupy mixture of sand and water where the sand is literally floating at the water. This acts just like quicksand.
  • Magic color-changing milk: – You will require a plate, milk, food coloring, dish soap and a clean cotton swab. Pour enough milk in your dinner plate to completely cover the bottom. Then add 4 drops of different food coloring around the center. Keep them close but make sure that the colors don’t touch. Place a drop of liquid dish soap on a cotton swab, put it in the middle of the plate and watch the burst of colors. When you add the soap, the protein and fat molecules in the milk bend, roll, twist, and turn in all the directions.
