Torres del Paine National Park

 

Torres del Paine National Park and is located in the southernmost and largest region of Chile called Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica. It was founded in 1959. At that time, it was known as the Parque Nacional de Tourismo Lago Grey meaning “Lake Grey Tourist national Park”. It covers an area of approximately 242,242 hectares. The highest point of this national park is Paine Grande Peak with an altitude of 10,000 feet.

  • Torres is the Spanish word for ‘towers’ and Paine is the Tehuelche word for ‘blue.’
  • The Torres del Paine National Park has a huge variety of plant and animal life.
  • This national park was declared a world biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 1978.
  • This national park holds a number of glaciers, lakes, rivers and valleys, ancient forests, and fjords within its boundaries.
  • It is also home to Cordillera del Paine which is a small but spectacular set of mountains.
  • This National Park is open all year round and is administered by the National Forestry Commission.
  • It is home to approximately 25 different mammal species including the guanaco, puma, Patagonian gray fox etc.
  • The guanaco is a wild relative of the domesticated llama and alpaca.
  • There are approximately 115 different species of birds including the Andean condor, crested cara cara, black vulture etc.
  • The Torres del Paine National Park is a very popular destination for hikers from all over the world.
