Zebras are closely related to horses and donkeys. They can be easily recognized by their striped white and black coat. These stripes are unique to each individual. Zebras belong to the Equidae family. These single-hoofed animals are native to Africa. There are three main species of zebras that can be found in the wilds of Africa which are: – Plains Zebra, Grevy’s Zebra, and Equus Zebra. All of three of them belong to a common genus Equus. Every species of zebras have a different type of stripes. The Grevy’s Zebra is the largest member of the horse family.

  • They have excellent eyesight and sense of hearing. They can run at a speed of up to 35 miles per hour.
  • A cross between a zebra and a donkey is called the zonkey.
  • A zebra runs in a zig-zag pattern when being chased by a predator.
  • They are social animals and prefer to live and graze in a group. A group of zebras is known as Zeal.
  • They do not lie down to sleep. They usually sleep standing up.
  • They can rotate their ears in almost any direction.
  • The average life span of a zebra in wild is about 20 to 30 years.
  • They are one of the few mammals that are believed to be able to see color but they cannot see the color orange.
  • Their main predators are lions and hyenas.
  • They are actually short and can reach up to a height of 3.5-5 feet.
  • Their black and white striped coat is a good bug repellent and protects them from horseflies and other bloodsuckers.
  • They use a variety of vocalizations to communicate with each other.
