Mount Eden Crater
Mount Eden Crater is one of the most prominent volcanic cones remaining in the Auckland region. It is also known as Maungawhau. The term ‘Maungawhau’ has been derived from the native Maori language that means ‘mountain or hill of the whau tree’. It is the highest natural point in the whole of Auckland, New Zealand.
It reaches an elevation of 196 meters above sea level. This mountain has more than 300 known archaeological features. It is a cinder cone volcano with a deep crater. The summit of Maungawhau is easily accessible from the center of Auckland and the summit gives 360 degree views.

- Mount Eden Crater was created by a group of three cones, with the most southern of the three erupting last and filling up the other two.
- It is roughly circular with a diameter of 180 meters and a depth of 50 meters.
- The city of Auckland is loaded with great views, being built on a volcanic field of 48 cones.
- Mount Eden is estimated to be 15,000 years old and is considered extinct, meaning that it is not expected to erupt again.
- The southern side of the crater rim is the highest point on the scoria cone which is also the highest point on the Auckland Isthmus.
- The Mount Eden Crater is named after the first earl of Auckland, George Eden.
- Maori tribes abandoned this place around 1700 AD when there was a clash between Hauraki tribes and Waiohua people.
- In 1927, the slopes of Mt. Eden were utilized to build the tea kiosk.
