Sahara desert is the hottest and the third largest desert in the whole world. The word Sahara has been derived from Arabic that means ‘the greatest desert’. This huge desert is located in North Africa and covers an area of 3,629,360 square miles. It comprises approximately 8% of the world’s land area. This desert covers 11 countries: – Algeria, Libya, Tunisia, Chad, Egypt, Eritrea, Niger, Mali, Mauritania, Sudan and Morocco. The total population of the Sahara Desert is 2 million.

  • Arabic is the most common language spoken in the Sahara.
  • In some parts of the Sahara Desert, temperature can exceed 120°F.
  • This desert used to be a fertile farmland and once it had various plant species.
  • The Sahara Desert is going through severe climate changes and getting warmer day by day.
  • The total rainfall in the area is less than 3 inches.
  • There are total 40 species of rodents that live in the Sahara Desert including Jerboa.
  • Dromedary camel is the most famous animal of the Sahara as it can drink up to 30 gallons of water in several minutes.
  • Some scientists believe that the desert will be lush and green again in approximately 15,000 years.
  • This desert is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, the Atlas Mountain, the Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea, Sudan and the Valley of Niger River.
  • In some of the higher mountain ranges of the Sahara, snow may fall occasionally.
  • There are more than 20 lakes in the desert. Most of them are saltwater lakes. Lake Chad is the only freshwater lake.
  • Sand storms are very common in the desert.
