Germ Theory of Disease Video for Kids
The germ theory is a basic principle of medicine that states that very small microorganisms that cannot be seen with human eyes enter in to our body and cause some diseases. Before this theory, majority of people believed that disease is a punishment for a person’s misdeeds.

- The theory is proposed in 1546 by Girolamo Fracastoro. And later in 1850s, Louis Pasteur provided convincing scientific evidence.
- This Germ theory supplanted two existing theories of miasma and contagion.
- Louis Pasteur was a French microbiologist who discovered some major principles like: – vaccination, pasteurization and microbial fermentation.
- After discovering the principle of fermentation, Pasteur still had some questions like what do the ferments consist of? And where did they come from?
- A majority of scientists believe that they appeared out of thin air. It is called the theory of spontaneous generation.
- The first simple microscope was constructed in 1677 by Antoni van Leeuwenhoek.
- He was examining droplets of water. Then he observed small organisms called animalcules.
- Scientists were able to observe microorganisms after development of primitive microscope by Robert Hook.
- Later, when germs were observed in the blood of people, who were suffering from diseases. They called it the result of disease instead of considering it as a reason.
- All the contagious diseases are caused by microorganisms.
- In 1870s, Robert Koch identified the bacterium which caused a disease of cattle, named as foranthrax.
