The Danube River is the second longest river in the Europe with a length of approximately 1,785 miles. It is also a major water source in Europe. It originates in Germany’s Black Forest at the intersection point of the Breg and Brigach Rivers and travels across Western Russia.
It flows through 10 countries including Germany, Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania, Croatia, Serbia, Slovakia, Austria, Moldova and Ukraine.
This river is unique as it flows into not one, but two different seas which are the North Sea and the Black Sea.

- Danube River is fed by more than 300 tributaries. Its main tributaries include Lech, Regen, Isar, Inn, Enns, and Morava.
- A total of 30 of the tributaries are navigable. The river has a drainage area of about 315,000 square miles.
- The river features the Iron Gate which is the longest and the largest gorge in Europe.
- Danube River has the second largest delta in Europe.
- The total surface area of the delta is 4,152 square kilometers and of which 3,446 square kilometers is in Romania.
- This river splits into three branches just before pouring into the Black Sea. Those branches are Chilia, Sulina and Sfantu Gheorghe.
- This river connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Black Sea through the Bavarian canal system.
- Danube is home to almost 200 species of fish in its waters. Because of the huge supply of sturgeon, it was an important source of food during middle ages.
